Meon Hall



The village hall of Meonstoke, Corhampton and Exton in Hampshire (Registered CIO 1157815)



Designed and built by the people of Meonstoke, Exton, and Corhampton in 1979-81, The Meon Hall continues the dedication from the old Meon Hut in the High Street to the memory of Benjamin and Samuel Smith of Meonstoke who were killed in action in 1915 in the First World War.

Opened by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent on 22 April 1982, our exceptional village hall project was awarded the Secretary of State for the Environment’s 1982 Village Venture prize.


The facilities comprise a reception area, large Main Hall for 200 with Stage (see pictures below); the Small Hall for 60 plus the modern well-equipped Kitchen; the Crypt meeting room for 30; sports changing rooms and showers. Facilities for the disabled are installed.  There is ample parking, with the adjacent Recreation Ground, small skate park and games wall, children’s play trail and adult exercise equipment. The Meon Hall is suitable for a wide range of both large and small events – wedding receptions, lectures, large and small group events.

All or part of the accommodation is available for hire at an hourly or daily rate.

How to get there……

The Meon Hall is located in the lovely Hampshire village of Meonstoke, in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the South Downs National Park  The Meon Hall serves the villages of Corhampton, Meonstoke, and Exton. Meonstoke is 10 miles from Winchester, Petersfield, and Fareham. The postcode is SO32 3NP.

Come into Meonstoke off the A32 at Corhampton; go past the Bucks Head public house uphill to the Jubilee Tree and bear left and then right into Pound Lane, following the Meon Hall signs. Then continue for ½ a mile over the old railway bridge. As you leave the area of houses, the Meon Hall will be found on the right-hand side.

Charges for the hire of the Hall and other facilities are set out below. Prices are given in £ per hour. We ask hirers for a deposit of 20% of the Hiring Charge (minimum £50) when making your booking well in advance, and then ask you to settle the invoice for the balance not less than 30 days before the event, together with your returnable Damage Deposit. Detailed hiring conditions are on the back of the booking form.

Please note some points about our HIRING CONDITIONS

Standard Terms and Conditions of Hire are stated on the reverse of the Bookings Form; the only basis for a Hiring contract is a Booking Form properly completed, signed and dated by both Hirer and Bookings Secretary.

Our Booking Secretary has discretion to refuse a proposed booking if a satisfactory explanation and assurances about the proposed use are not given. Failure to disclose information may invalidate the hiring contract. The Meon Hall Management Committee does not accept bookings for teenage parties, teenage discos, nor 18th birthday parties.

Payments for hiring are to be made in full in advance. If your plans change then at least 28 days notice of cancellation must be given to the Bookings Secretary; short notice may incur a cancellation charge.

Availability of the Meon Hall’s facilities for preparations before a hiring cannot be guaranteed. If preparations before your hiring, and/or clearing up afterwards are likely to be extensive and/or longer than 1.5 hours you will be asked to pay an additional hiring charge at the Bookings Secretary’s discretion.

The Meon Hall is a Smoke Free building (2007 government legislation). The Meon Hall is not licensed for the sale of alcohol; if you require bar facilities you must make your own arrangements but must tell the Booking Secretary first, then submit a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) to Winchester City Council Licensing Department, and the Police, with a copy to the Bookings Secretary.  Details of the TEN application form are on the WCC website. An additional charge of up to £30.00 is payable for a hiring with a TEN to cover extra cleaning costs.

All furniture and 150 settings of china, cutlery, and glasses are included in the hiring charge. Certain items can be hired for use away from the Meon Hall, subject to other hirers needs – please ask the Bookings Secretary.


The Meon Hall is all electric. Our hiring charges include the cost of using lights, power points, and some heating; all other electricity use is supplied by meters or timers.  Kitchen and Sports Meters use £1.00 coins or pre-loaded credit cards, Main Hall/Crypt timers £1.00 coins; we supply electricity at the standard rate cost per Kw unit or economy rate cost per Kw unit, each rate is plus Climate Change levy + Standing charge + 20% VAT for business use.   If you expect to use hot water, cookers, heaters, stage lights, sports showers, and do not wish to feed the meters during your hiring, we will arrange to read and override the meters, and agree with you an invoice for payment at the end of the hiring. Alternatively we can deduct the cost from your Damage Deposit, and return the balance to you after the hiring. Please enter on your booking forms what you would like to do about paying for your electricity use. Meon Hall electricity resale is at the permitted resale prices, standard units 19.5p/Kw unit and economy units 10.9p/Kw unit.

The Management Committee reserve the right of admission and may vary charges, damage deposits, and hiring conditions.

Booking enquiries

To make a bookings enquiry, please email to the Booking Secretary at meonhallbookings@yahoo.co.uk who will respond to you as soon as possible. Please send details of your intended hire and what you want to achieve, including date, facilities required and your contact phone number and your address.

When we have agreed a date for your booking, we will ask you to pay either the full hiring fee or the advance booking deposit and once this has been received and the booking form signed, the date will be reserved for you.

Safety at The Meon Hall

Hirers of The Meon Hall are asked to comply with a requirement of the Meon Hall’s Public Entertainment and Theatre Licences which state that all hirers are to nominate a minimum of 2 ADULTS present as Attendants who will be responsible for SAFETY during the hiring.  Events involving Teenagers or Children must have a minimum of 4 nominated ADULTS present as Attendants responsible for SAFETY. The duties of the Attendants are:

IN AN EMERGENCY SAVE LIFE by the following actions:

1. Get help by telephoning 999 on the Foyer telephone or your mobile phone, and asking for FIRE, POLICE, or AMBULANCE at The Meon Hall post code SO32 3NP

2. A quiet orderly evacuation from the Meon Hall to the Car Park or Recreation Ground muster points. If you are giving a safety brief in your hiring, tell people where their muster point is.

On arrival at The Meon Hall

The Hirer is to check in the rooms being used that:

1. Your mobile phone has coverage – Vodaphone and Orange are just OK on 3G

2. All EXIT doors and staircases are clear and unobstructed inside and outside.

3. The Fire Alarm panel in the entrance is operating – green light on.

4. The Fire Safety Boards hanging in the entrance and by EXIT doors are in position.

5. The Foyer telephone is working for 999 calls – press button bottom right – listen for dialing tone – press button again to switch off

6. EXIT signs in rooms in use are switched on by black switch underneath, or nearby key switch (This includes rooms darkened for lectures, stage plays, concert performances)

7. Fire Extinguishers and Fire Blankets are in position in rooms in use.

8. Chairs that will be used in rows are linked together

9. A gangway of 1 metre width is left clear between rows of chairs and walls; in the Main Hall a centre 1 metre gangway is required as well.

10. Seating capacities of the Main Hall (200), Small Hall (60), Crypt (30) are not exceeded.

11. At night the Car Park lights are switched on – switches in Outer Foyer by Main Door.

12. When using the Main Hall with over 100 people present, unlock the Main Hall patio door for use as an EXIT. Each EXIT door will cope with 50 people.

Before hiring starts 

Check that access is clear through the Car Park to the Main Door of the Foyer for Fire Engines and Ambulances in emergency.   Do not hesitate to tell people to move cars clear both in the car park, in Pound Lane, and at the Pound Lane/Frys Lane cross-roads.

After hiring ends

Using the Meon Hall Locking Up checklist (hanging in the Foyer), make sure that for the rooms that have been in use, everyone has left the building, and :

1. Waste bins emptied, naked flames snuffed out, cigarettes in external bins extinguished

2. EXIT signs, lights, kitchen, electrical equipment switched off (Fridges /Freezer stay on)

3. Fire EXIT doors latched, patio doors locked, kitchen hatch shut; internal doors locked, all windows closed and latched in the secure position.

4. Car park floodlights switched off.
